MS, the IP multimedia subsystem, is the new future standard for communication networks. Supported by large organisations such as  3GPP, OMA, ETSI and others, it is the first network for the next decade which is fully IP-based and convergent. No matter whether a user is on the Internet, a mobile network (GSM or 3G), a network based on a fixed-network or a WiFi network, IMS ensures barrier-free access to all services and protocols available.
MATERNA, a telecommunications specialist of many years' standing, has already initiated first activities and development projects in the field of IMS and is following a tripartite strategy there:

• The established MATERNA products (for example the service delivery platform  MACS, the WAP/ Mobile Data Gateway and the  FSMSC/ FMMSC) will become IMS-compatible
  
  
• New, innovative IMS products will be developed (for example IMS A³, the IMS Access Gateway for 3rd parties and service providers)
  
  
• The development of applications which enable real end-to-end communication in the IMS network is being accelerated (e.g. the personalised waiting loop music, MusicOnHold)
