MATERNA brings new version of the successful SS7 Data Gateway to market

Data transfer in Mobile Networks

By: Antje Krämer

Barcelona/Dortmund, 12 February 2007.
With the SS7 Data Gateway (SDG), the information and telecommunications specialist MATERNA offers a product, which allows sending and receiving of SMS messages directly via the SS7 net of a network operator. The indirect way via a SMS Center thus becomes unessential and possible shortages, which have occurred so far due to a limited SMSC performance, can consequently be avoided. This makes the data transfer much more flexible.

The protocol SS7 is employed in GSM and UMTS networks as well as in the fixed network. Via SS7 signals, connections are routed, messages transmitted and extended network functionalities are recalled. When it comes to mobile networks, especially all functions of the Mobile Application Part (MAP) are of great interest. They are, for instance, used for scannings of the network data bases (e.g. the HLR: „Home Location Register) and the transmission of short messages.

The new version 2.0 of the SS7 Data Gateways is supporting an universal connection of an external application to the SDG via the SMPP protocol. In – and outgoing messages are still processed via MAP, but MATERNA was able to increase the performance of the message transmission significantly.

The solution is executable under Windows 2003 Server und Linux RedHat Enterprise Server 3.0. Monitoring of the gateway is realised by integration into network management systems using SNMP.

In one of the following versions, the SDG will support the SS7 protocols CAMEL and USSD. According to MATERNA, especially the USSD Browsing (the dialogue between user and application via text formats) will open up new and interesting use cases.
