After successful launch of its MVNO enabler “vistream”: MATERNA will now enter the international market

Enabling MVNOs through custom product and services

Dortmund/Barcelona, 12 February 2007

Today’s mobile communications market is extremely competitive and it is very difficult for the existing Mobile Network Operators with their established brands to address new market segments (eg. ethno brands, niche markets) and get access to new market channels (eg. discounter, fixed network operators). To reuse the already done investments in technology and rollout efficiently the Mobile Network Operators are interested to increase the generated traffic as much as possible and in conclusion to increase their revenue. At the same time the Mobile Network Operators are not willing to make huge investments to enable their network and their business support systems to be able to address these new market requirements. To assist MNOs and new MVNOs in addressing these issues, MATERNA is entering the international market as an MVNE, looking to partner with established telecommunications providers and upcoming MVNOs.

MATERNA has already founded the first real MVNE in Germany, with its subsidiary vistream GmbH - an innovator of telecommunication products and services – who is already supporting companies, who wish to establish themselves as mobile virtual network operators. MATERNA benefits from its industry experience and the market footprint in Germany. The existing infrastructure of a fully featured MVNE has been designed for international markets from the beginning. MATERNA can guarantee every MVNO and branded retailer a rapid time to market.

The biggest challenge in the MVNE business are the various business models in the different countries. They depend very much on regulatory requirements, technical implementation choices and market strategies. MATERNA has the power to have the overall picture in mind. The goal is to enable MVNOs to configure and provision their own products and services without only reselling preconfigured MNO products. MNO in return does not need to increase the complexity of its IT and network systems. Therefore, a platform is to be set up that can easily be configured and controlled to meet the MVNO’s objectives.

MVNE platform functions plus additional value
One of the key elements of MATERNAs MVNE platform is the scalability and flexibility. The platform is adoptable to almost any environment via a component-based architecture. The standards include the complete coverage of all business processes of a mobile network. The implementation of new products can be realized by configuration instead of coding. Moreover, the ability to treat different clients in one system environment („Multi-Client-Capability“) with complete isolation of data for different MVNOs is an essential requirement. The support of billing for prepaid, postpaid, interconnection and inter-partner-billing with separate accounts receivable and collections is a basic requirement. Front-ends for Customer Care, POS, Web Self-Care, Partner, Configuration, Reporting and Operations as well as the Backend-Interfaces to Core-Network (Provisioning, CDRs), SIM Distributor, Prepaid-System and MNP are necessary.
In addition, MATERNAs MVNE platform allows to support promotions, loyalty programs, cross-selling as well as mobile value-added services. These services reflect the increasing demand for individual telecommunication services, e.g. an integrated content management system for downloading content and various applications via one dedicated platform. The Anny Way WAP gateway guarantees the Web and WAP access for mobile data services. An SMSC and MMSC supports the MVNE business with various MVNOs using the same environment for branded services. A dedicated voice mail system provides multi-tenancy support, i.e. provisioning of several MVNOs or Branded retailers and their subscribers, independently of each other. A device management platform is aware about the customer specific user terminal and is automatically sending the device and service specific configuration data to the customer. In case he is changing his device it will be updated immediately. The customer is directly able to use all offered services without manual configuration of his device. Due to the increasing number of services and devices that is an essential functionality to ease the use for the customer and in conclusion to increase the revenue for the provider.
Singleness through customization
MATERNA wants to set itself apart (besides its operation and consulting services) by offering differentiated services and products, e.g. individual portals for specific market segments or attractive roaming tariffs for people who travel a lot. Another emphasis has been put on fixed net and mobile network integration, an issue, which is becoming increasingly popular among network operators.
