MATERNA Information & Communications, information and telecommunications specialist, provides a product enabling the direct sending and receiving of SMS messages over the SS7 network, without the necessity to go through an SMS centre, the SS7 Data Gateway (SDG). A bottleneck, caused, e.g. by a limitation of SMSC throughput capacity, can be avoided, making data transfer much more flexible.
The signaling protocol SS7 is used with GSM and UMTS networks as well as with the fixed net. Connection and disconnection of calls, the transmission of messages and the request of extended network functionalities, etc. are controlled over SS7 signals. In wireless networks, the functions of the Mobile Application Part (MAP), based on the SS7 protocol, are particularly interesting for requests from internal data bases, such as the Home Location Register (HLR), and the transmission of SMS messages.
MATERNAs SDG is a platform, connecting the wireless operator´s SS7 network with any application for the sending of SMS messages in an efficient way. Version 1.0 of the SDG provides an http interface, enabling the request of IMSI to MSISDN. Using this functionality, the target network, in which the SMS message recipient is in, can be found over the operator´s HLR. This applies also for roaming. Through the SS7 MAP function "Send Routing Information for Short Message" (SRI_for_SM) the according information is retrieved from a network operator´s HLR. The solution works with Windows 2000 and Linux RedHat Enterprise Server 3.0.
The SDG will be used in the Fixed Net SMS and Fixed Net MMS environment, for the time being. Within a short time, further generic MAP SMS functions, enabling the direct sending and receiving of SMS and other messages over an SS7 network, will be made available by means of an SMPP interface.
