Strong innovative push with MATERNA

Persistent extension of technological leadership

Dortmund, 07 February 2006

By: Antje Krämer

At 3GSM World Congress, in Barcelona, telecommunications specialist MATERNA Information & Communications is presenting the results of its comprehensive activities, with regard to the development of new products and solutions. At stand F45, in hall 2, MATERNA is demonstrating, live, the applications possible with RFID (Radio Frequency Identity), IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystems) and RSS (Really Simple Syndication) in the telecommunications environment. Furthermore, interested trade visitors are given the opportunity to have a look at one of the first applications from the international research project GOLLUM. In the frame of an exemplary city portal, the application automatically adapts the displayed content (pictures, videos, etc.), according to the available bandwidth.

Recently, MATERNA founded the department “Strategy & Innovations“, to strengthen its technological market leadership. The company aims at an early development of practical and convenient solutions, based on new technologies and standards.

New communications and marketing channel RFID
Modern technology allows contactless identification of any kind of object through radio waves. RFID opens up new practical fields of application, replacing well-known features of the barcode or the optical recognition of objects.
At 3GSM World Congress, MATERNA is demonstrating an application in the telecommunications environment.  An advertising placard will call on the visitors to hold a mobile device at a specially marked point, to receive a music title. Approaching this point, the device automatically generates an order SMS to MATERNAs own Service Delivery Platform, MACS, asking the user´s permission to send it. After this, the SMS is sent to MACS, which sends back a WAP Push with the download of the requested music track, to be downloaded and saved by the purchaser.

A portfolio with attractive products - IMS
The new all-IP infrastructure of the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) will enable totally new application scenarios. IMS, connecting telecommunications with the Internet world, allows the use of new services, which could not be realised before. Established MATERNA products, such as MACS (Service Delivery Platform) and the Mobile Data Gateway, have persistently been prepared for the IMS world, through own connectors and the extension of features, like SIP (Session Initiation Protocol).
In addition to that, absolutely new products, like IMS A³ (IMS Application Access API) make the MATERNA product portfolio complete. Thus, the Dortmund-based company gives 3rd parties the possibility of a controlled and dedicated connection of their applications and services with the IMS network over a gateway, provided with a complex API, offering all the functions required for external use. It is available within the environment hosted by MATERNA as well as a purchasable product solution.

Individual info services, quickly obtained with a handset - RSS2Mobile
Anny Way RSS2Mobile is the ideal solution for network operators and service providers, aiming at a sustained increase in messaging traffic through new services, and also for all Internet portals intending to offer their customers simple mobile access to their contents.
Any web site (newspapers, real estate and car markets, flirt portals, etc.) supporting RSS technology can be activated immediately, without any integration effort. Users just configure their personal key words. When those appear in the RSS feeds of the web sites, their content will be sent as an SMS or MMS message. This paves the way for new, private info services to be created quickly and without complication.

International research team for independent API: GOLLUM
GOLLUM is a consortium of international partners from science, research and industry. GOLLUM aims at studying and creating key parts of an open, operating system independent link-layer API (Application Program Interface) to support heterogeneous systems by unifying the various methods for accessing different wired and especially wireless links. The GOLLUM API is aimed to simplify the wireless access programming as seen by programmers, and same time providing more flexibility and new features for innovative applications. MATERNA has been a member of GOLLUM for more than one year.
In Barcelona, the company is, for the first time, demonstrating an application from this research area. The GOLLUM device will be browsing the “Dortmund city guide“ application via GPRS. Suitable picture and text content will be displayed for the access medium GPRS. Through WLAN activation for the GOLLUM device and reloading of the web site, the GOLLUM device recognises automatically, that also broad band content can be retrieved and will display also videos that can be downloaded to the web sites.
